Basic Function of the Position: The incumbent manages the full operations of the Calgary Non-immigrant Visa (NIV) Unit and is responsible for supervising, training, and developing six full-time locally employed (LE) staff visa assistants in addition to providing daily operational oversight to two full-time eligible family member (EFM) consular assistants. S/he researches and makes determinations of visa ineligibilities and other complex NIV matters for the final review and/or approval of three American NIV officers. S/he is responsible for managing NIV resources and scheduling appointments to a capacity while maintaining a low visa appointment wait time. S/he is the primary contact for all USCIS, CBP, State Dept., Embassy Ottawa, Attorneys, and U.S. and Canadian agencies regarding visa processing requirements, visa applications, applications for Waivers of Ineligibility, and matters of immigration law.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible work experience performing administrative work involving contact with the general public and the application of complex regulations.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: Incumbent must possess significant knowledge of 9 FAM regulations and guidelines and other Department instructions on visa matters to include relevant knowledge of Canadian criminal and civil law.
Completion of two years of full-time post secondary education in general studies is required.
LANGUAGE: Level IV (fluent) in reading/writing/speaking English is required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must work effectively as the NIV (Non-immigrant Visa) Unit Supervisor ensuring effective functioning of the NIV Unit. Must be able to prioritize and delegate work, give direction and exercise good judgment. Excellent written and spoken communication skills, and the ability to exercise tack and judgment in dealing with the public, staff and officials are required. Working knowledge of mission responsibilities, roles and objectives. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications. Must be able to perform under pressure and be resourceful.
